Three EU projects are working on the effects of cryosphere loss on Arctic biodiversity: FACE-IT research focuses on the coast, ECOTIP research focuses on the open ocean and CHARTER is researching on land. Together, the three projects synthesized their research results and formulated five thematic areas for EU research priorities:

  1.  Carbon sequestration
  2. Land use change and socio-ecological systems
  3. Environmental economics
  4. Biodiversity and novel ecosystems
  5. Land-coast-ocean interactions in a melting cryosphere

as well as identifying the research gaps left to fill for each.
